When we discuss options for dining tables, initially we could be looking at four shape options: square, round, rectangle, or oval. However, I often can quickly narrow down to the last two shapes for a very specific reason.

In this area of North Dallas, dining rooms or (dining areas in an open concept) overwhelmingly have a similar size and layout within the floor plan. And because of the way they are typically laid out, square and round tables often don’t fit well.

Round tables are amazing for conversation because everyone at the table can see each other. But round tables need a bigger square footage and many homes don’t have the right amount of space in their dining area.
The dining table shape that maximizes seating without taking up an awkward amount of square footage is a rectangle. It’s a classic and always popular dining table shape that you usually can’t go wrong with.
However, I have found that combining these two shapes can be exactly what this area’s typical dining room needs.

When it works for the room, I love to do an oval dining table because it gives the best of the two most popular table shapes. You get the conversational benefits of the round table without needing such a big footprint.
The room layout an oval table works especially well in
The oval shape can be especially nice in a home with one large great room where the kitchen, dining, and living area are lined up one after another within that room. I see this layout a lot here in Frisco. That type of great room typically ends up with a row of rectangles down the center of it because of the kitchen island on one side, then the dining table in the middle, then a sofa and coffee table at the other end.
An oval dining table is a nice way to break up all the rectangles and make this layout look more interesting.
