Choosing lighting that coordinates without matching
One of the marks of a builder-grade home is that the lighting throughout is all clearly a set. The pendant in the entry is a match to the chandelier over the dining table, and every hallway has a matching boob light that coordinates with the light kit on every ceiling fan.
Updating lighting and ceiling fans is one of the fastest ways to make the typical new build in North Dallas feel more custom and high end.
Here’s some tips for combining different light fixtures.
Start by finding a favorite.
It’s the one that will inform all the others. Select something for one of the main rooms, so either the entry, living room, dining room, or over the kitchen island. Don’t choose the room first- just have in your mind that you are looking for a ceiling light for one of these areas and then let what you find dictate which room it goes in.
Make note of that fixture’s characteristics
It’s color, material, overall shape, or the shape of the individual pieces that it is made of.
One or more of these details is what you will be looking to repeat in the other lighting you select.
With the chandelier in the above photo, I paired it with other lighting fixtures that repeat the curved shape of its 3 shades, as well as repeating the brass metal finish and the white shade color.
Selecting lighting is one of my favorite things that I do as an interior designer. I love how lighting changes the whole mood of a house, and it is especially rewarding to see how much updating the lighting fixtures changes the look and feel of the type of homes that we have here in North Dallas.
